An essay’s opening paragraph should leave readers with an engaging first impression and inspire them to keep reading.
Though not always feasible, starting off your speech with an engaging hook can be an excellent way to do just that. Make sure it ties back into the topic, while being potentially controversial.
Marilyn Mosby
Marilyn Mosby first immersed herself in politics at an early age. As part of high school newspaper staff and student government activities, she participated in student politics. Later as an undergraduate at Tuskegee University she marched in Selma and visited James Chaney’s grave site in Meridian Mississippi as well as volunteering for NAACP meetings locally as a leader for an organization teaching students about civil rights. After moving to Baltimore she continued her activism alongside law and politics.
As Baltimore’s state attorney, Mosby has spearheaded the fight against police abuse in her city. She is considered one of the nation’s most influential black prosecutors and holds national significance. Mosby’s office pushed forward in their pursuit of criminal charges against officers involved in Freddie Gray’s death – in an unprecedented news conference where they announced the medical examiner had determined it a homicide, and they would charge six officers with second-degree murder for their actions.
Mosby stunned legal observers when she decided to indict three officers herself instead of waiting for a grand jury indictment to go forward. Her action was consistent with her campaign pledge to hold police accountable for misconduct allegations; in her 16-minute press conference she stated her decision as being made because she could no longer trust their internal investigation of this case.
Mosby has filed charges against numerous officers since, even those previously cleared by other grand juries. Her office’s actions have drawn significant scrutiny from defense attorneys who claim that Mosby is violating constitutional protections against double jeopardy; her office plans on appealing the cases they feel have been improperly indicted.
Baltimore prosecutor Marilyn Mosby is well aware that her job can be hazardous. Amid an alarmingly high homicide rate in her city, Mosby frequently receives threats against herself and her family – in one instance appearing on Judge Judy to seek damages after one of her neighbors allegedly trashed her apartment; receiving personal death threats, as well as hate mail depicting both she and her husband as sexual perverts.

Michael Reynal
Reynal claimed he was only giving listeners “an alternative viewpoint”, and felt his statements had been unfairly attacked by families of Sandy Hook victims. Reynal asserted his right to free speech.
Judge Maya Guerra Gamble issued her ruling against Reynal in January for making “knowingly groundless statements,” delaying trial time, interfering with court functions and lying during testimony; also uncooperative during testimony and uncooperative with proceedings overall. She noted Reynal had misused his position as Jones’ attorney and exploited it to manipulate this case for some time.
Attorneys representing Jones and parents of victims clashed during an argument over video evidence in their trial. Reynal became upset when Mark Bankston denied him permission to show videos from InfoWars broadcasts by Jones to the jury, becoming angry as Reynal approached and accused Bankston of refusing him access to show the jury clips from them; Reynal then moved closer and called Bankston out before flashing him the middle finger – an incident caught on video footage.
Reynal has maintained his claim that the lawsuit lacks merit and claims that its filers seek excessive damages. Reynal will appeal the decision if necessary.

Thomas Jones
Thomas Jones had an 11-season NFL career that spanned three teams – Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Chicago Bears among them – playing multiple positions including running back. In addition to one Pro Bowl appearance and membership in the 10,000-yard club, after retiring he transitioned into acting – most notably featuring on Netflix’s Straight Outta Compton as well as appearing in independent short film Love and the Line and having recurring roles on Luke Cage as an ongoing character.
Jones’ story is intricate and captivating. Beginning as he seeks moral and spiritual salvation from slavery and its abuses, eventually becoming an abolitionist minister and eventually married into an abolitionist family himself with whom he shared an affectionate bond; ultimately leading the life of a Christian gentleman.
In April 1865, Jones was summoned to Samuel Cox’s home at Rich Hill in Southern Maryland. Cox, who had helped Booth and Herold escape Ford’s Theater, asked Jones to keep watch over both men while he went to Washington and requested permission to cross the Potomac River.
Union troops had been informed of the assassination, and sent a patrol near Popes Creek where the river divided Maryland from Virginia. Jones was asked to ferry mail, food, soldiers and ammunition across by night in response to signals from houses on both sides of the Potomac – making these trips at dusk or dawn when boats would be difficult to spot.
Jones completed his duties without incident and returned to Cox’s home, where he continued his service for the two fugitives. It soon transpired that they intended to travel to Richmond in order to collect money owed them from the Confederacy, and they needed his assistance in doing so.
Jones could suffer a devastating financial blow at trial, placing his conspiracy peddling businesses further at risk. Though banned from most social media platforms, Jones maintains he owes millions in debt and has threatened legal action against plaintiffs for defamation.
